Volunteers in the Classroom

These parents have volunteered for this week and next week

It really saves me a lot of time and stress having you volunteer in the classroom.  I know it seems small, but I really rely on your help with the items you signed up for.

September 27th News of the Week

This week we will be going on our field trip to the cementary.  It will be on Thursday, September 30th and we will leave at 9:30.  If you signed up to go on the field trip, please be at the school by 9:10.  We will be walking to the cementary, so please wear comfortable shoes.  Remember to dress for the weather by wearing a coat or sweater if needed,  a hat, and clothing appropriate for the temperature. Parents, please adhere to the dress code of the school.

Parents please make sure your child is gettting plenty of sleep and a good breakfast.  I see many students with their heads resting on the arms and looking as if they are half asleep.  It is very important that your child pays attention to instruction so that I don't have to repeat the same thing over and over.  Please remind your child that school is for learning and in order to learn you have to try.

Also, the lunch room has advised me that there are many 2nd graders not throwing away their trash, climbing under the tables, having a food fight, and misbehaving .  Please remind your child to have good manners in the lunch room and to clean up after themselves.  It is very hard for one person to supervise two grade levels, so she needs everyone to be on their best behavior.

We are working on addition strategies in math.  Please have your child practice adding numbers up to twenty.  This will help them learn the facts and be able to recall the answers instantly.  In language arts, we are learning about verbs, punctuation marks, and beginning the sentence with a capital letter.  When your child does his/her homework, please make sure the sentences begin with a capital letter and end with the appropriate punctuation mark.  We have learned to print the letters up to Nn.  The children do very well when we practice as a whole group, but become sloppy when they are writing the letters on their own.  Please have your child practice printing at home as a daily routine.  The more they practice, the better they get.

If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me. You may do so through this blog or email me at marlane.forsyth@comcast.net.  I would like to thank all of you who are volunteering. If you would like to do so, please let me know.

Weekly Letter

Dear Parents,

We are in our fourth week in school, and the children are slowly settling into the routine of the day.  I have been noticing some consistent behaviors in the classroom.  Please remind your child of the following rules:
       1. To be quiet when they are working and listening to a speaker.
       2. To pay attention in class and focus on the lesson
       3. To try to do the work and then ask for help
       4. To be on time and be prepared to learn.
       5. To do his/her best

With 26 students in the classroom, it is frustrating to other students who are paying attention to have to keep stopping and remind students to pay attention or to get to work. It is very important that your child stay focused on the instructions and stay on task.  We have a lot to cover within a shorter time frame during the day.

This week and next week we will continue to learn about rocks.  If your child has a unique rock he/she wants to bring in, they are more than welcome to do so.  We try to do Science on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesdays.  On Thursday, September 30th, we will be walking over to the cemetary to end the unit on rocks.

I have been noticing most children are bringing back their homework and reading log each day.  I really appreciate it very much.  I have two volunteers who do the homework folders, and it makes it easier when everyone brings back their homework in the folders.  Please make sure to write down the minutes your child read each day and initial it.  The children do not earn a smilely face unless it is initialed.

Please remember to keep your child's lunch account paid up.  It makes Michele's job easier when she doesn't have to send notes home and has to remind your child about his/her lunch money.

I would like to thank all of you who have volunteered in the classroom.  Mrs. Roberts has sent home a calendar for September and October to those who are volunteering.  It saves me a lot of time and frustration when I have parent helpers.  If you did not get a calendar or would like to volunteer, please post a response and we will be happy to add you on.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I really appreciate it.

If you have any questions or concerns you may email at marlane.forsyth@jordan.k12.ut.us.
